1. Thailand (Bangkok & Chiang Mai)
- Bangkok: Get into the backpacking vibe on Khaosan Road. The Grab app is essential for transportation.
- Chiang Mai: Take the night train or bus. As a mecca for living for a month, prices are low and there are many cafes.
- Tip: Fine dust in Chiang Mai can be severe during February and March, so be sure to check the air quality app (AirVisual).
2. Thailand → Laos (Slow Boat Romance)
- The most backpacker-friendly way to get from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang, Laos is by slow boat.
- You can leisurely travel along the Mekong River for two days and make friends with travelers from around the world. (If you want to travel quickly, use Lao Airlines.)
3. Laos → Vietnam (Luang Prabang & Hanoi)
- Luang Prabang: Kuang Si Waterfall is a must, not an option. Don’t forget to be polite when participating in early morning alms.
- Hanoi: Feel the vibrancy of Vietnam. For tours to Halong Bay or Ninh Binh near Hanoi, it is safer to book online in advance than to book locally to prevent fraud and be cleaner.
1.5-2 million won for 2 weeks, including flights, is enough.

By using a night bus, you can save money on lodging and save time.

It is most convenient to purchase a local SIM card at the airport.
